There are plenty of digital voice recorders out there.
I picked this one: Olympus WS-331M Digital Voice Recorder
Why?

3. Easy to pull the device apart to reveal the USB connector.
4. No proprietary software needed to get the audio files off the device or for listening.
5. Has the ability to turn the device off completely to prevent accidental recording and battery waste.
6. Small and light weight.
7. Use one AAA battery -- easy to replace at a drugstore.
This device has been used for recording lectures (if not too far back) and telephone conversations (with a recording adapter from Radio Shack). Results on both: totally acceptable.
